Costumes - The Band And Modern

After deciding that we wanted the band to be indie, we started to pull together inspirations and references on Pinterest, and also showed each other pictures of suitable clothing that we owned, and thought we could use for the shoot.

For the male band members, Brandon suggested the shirts on the left.

These fit the indie image of the band, as it is common for male indie band members to wear button up shirts, with the top button done up. This clearly connotes the genre to the audience, as this style is also stereotypical of 'hipsters', who are associated with this genre.
Chrystal's suggestion

Audrey and Chrystal also suggested button up shirts and skinny jeans, which also fit the indie image of the band. However, we found that they both suggested quite similar outfits, that were also similar to the male members, so we may have one or both of the girls wear slightly different outfits.

I suggested the clothing on the left; whilst I also suggested a button up shirt, I also suggested more vintage looking clothing, as this is the current 'hipster', indie clothing trend, and it fits the image that we want for our band - for example, the patterned cardigan on the top left.

We also decided that the lead boy would wear the outfit on the left for band, and the black trousers with a yellow button up shirt for modern.
For the lead girl, we decided on a grey t-shirt and a patterned skirt, as this is also recognisably modern and different from the other era costumes.

For the band members, we decided that:

Chrystal, the bassist, would wear black skinny jeans with a red blouse and black shoes. This is because the slightly vintage shirt connotes the indie genre, as it would be considered 'hipster' to wear vintage clothing, and the indie genre is commonly associated with hipsters.

Audrey, the guitarist, would wear a black skirt with a pink top and black shoes. We thought that she should wear a skirt as it provided variety from the black skinny jeans that the other band members would be wearing, and it also connotes femininity, so female audience members could relate to both Audrey and Chrystal as more than one style is being portrayed. Again, the vintage style top connotes the 'hipster' style, which is associated with the indie genre.

Brandon, the drummer, would wear black skinny jeans, a white t-shirt, an open button up shirt and black shoes. This is an outfit commonly worn by 'hipsters', again connoting the indie genre. It also portrays the band as 'styled yet cool', which is a convention of indie bands.
